We’ve taken dozens of cruise and know that for those unfamiliar with formal night, it can feel a bit unnerving trying to figure out the ins and outs of dressing up.

If you’re sightseeing or shopping, ladies may want to wear a sundress, t-shirt and shorts, or jeans and a cute top. Many first time cruisers are concerned about what to wear on formal nights on a cruise. It’s understandable, as this is quite different from a typical land vacation. While you definitely can still wear an evening gown and tuxedo, most popular cruise lines have relaxed their dress codes over the last few years. You can still expect to dress up on a cruise, but there are more opportunities to dress less formally if you prefer this as well. You might be wondering what to pack and what to wear on a cruise, during the day, evening and even on formal nights. Both casual and smart casual suggest pants or skirts with collared shirts or blouses, but smart casual discourages jeans and suggests jackets for men and pantsuits for women.
Non-Formal Night Outfit Ideas
Make sure to pack a couple bathing suit cover ups, to use when by the pool on a sea day, as well as on cruise port days. Keep this in mind when planning your wardrobe so you don't feel out of place. During your Caribbean cruise, you can count on having at least one Formal Night or Dress Your Best. Shorter cruises will call this evening Dress Your Best while longer sailings will call it Formal Night. Of all the destinations you can cruise with Royal Caribbean, you can expect the most participation on Formal Night if you’re sailing on a European itinerary.

Norwegian prides itself on allowing cruisers to dress as they please, providing a "come as you are" atmosphere during the day and at night. The most popular clothing is cruise casual, and passengers are free to wear whatever they'd like with an emphasis on comfort. Exceptions are the line's "dress-up" nights — two on sailings of a week or more and one on shorter voyages.
So if you are just hanging out around the ship — having a drink in a bar, playing in the casino, watching an evening show — then you are perfectly fine dressing down. While many people participate in formal night, a considerable chunk of passengers don’t. Women can simply wear a cocktail dress or a nice blouse with pants. For men, it’s fine to wear a suit, or even a buttoned-down shirt and a pair of slacks if you don’t want to get too fancy. Nice jeans would also be ok, although we’d suggest something slightly more dressy.

Overall, Royal Caribbean’s dress code is fairly laid back with just a few general rules to keep in mind. It’s important to remember that these dress codes apply only to the main dining room. If you plan to eat in the Windjammer buffet for most of your meals, you don’t need to follow these guidelines. At the end of the day, what you pack for a fun 3-night sailing to the Bahamas will be totally different than what you’d plan to wear on a 12-night cruise to Norway or 7-night cruise to Alaska. Don’t forget to pack your favorite swimsuits for fun-filled days by the pool or at the beach.
Our Evening Chic dress code leaves a lot of room for you to show off your personal style, although we’d ask you to leave your ripped jeans or favorite college sweatshirt in your stateroom. You can wear anything from designer denim paired with a blazer to a cocktail dress with a killer set of heels. Our more formal nights are called “Evening Chic” nights because they’re all about guests looking their absolute best—and loving it.
