What are cruise line dress codes? Here's what travelers should know

cruise dress code

Comfortable, smart attire is generally acceptable for younger cruisers on formal nights. While you don’t need an entirely different wardrobe, the ship’s ambiance does change from day to night. Casual wear dominates the day, but evenings, especially in dining and entertainment venues, lean towards smart casual or formal, depending on the night. We’ve taken dozens of cruise and know that for those unfamiliar with formal night, it can feel a bit unnerving trying to figure out the ins and outs of dressing up.

Don’t Forget Theme Nights

Added to this, is the individual interpretation of what is meant by each of these dress codes which often leads to interesting, if not heated conversations on cruise forums. If you’re sightseeing or shopping, ladies may want to wear a sundress, t-shirt and shorts, or jeans and a cute top. Always pack a light scarf, shawl or cardigan in case you encounter air conditioning or go into a religious building (church or synagogue) and need to cover your shoulders. When a casual mood calls, you have plenty of choices – even on formal nights, you’re able to choose how you dine with us. Dine when and how you want with this new offering that lets you customize every aspect of mealtime.

Cruising with Family & Kids

If you’re going hiking, biking or ATV riding, especially in a rainforest or glacial region, don’t forget a rain jacket with a hood and comfortable, waterproof hiking boots or shoes. These items are essential as well for glacier excursions like Dog Sledding on Mendenhall Glacier via Helicopter. Of course it’s colder at night, and during the earlier and later times in the cruise season. Some excursions in warm-weather destinations require extra items in your suitcase. Sturdy, comfortable hiking or athletic shoes are obviously needed for hiking excursions, such as the Scenic Coastal Hike in St. Maarten or the Hop-on, Hop-off trolley tour in Key West.

Many first time cruisers are concerned about what to wear on formal nights on a cruise. It’s understandable, as this is quite different from a typical land vacation. While you definitely can still wear an evening gown and tuxedo, most popular cruise lines have relaxed their dress codes over the last few years. You can still expect to dress up on a cruise, but there are more opportunities to dress less formally if you prefer this as well. You might be wondering what to pack and what to wear on a cruise, during the day, evening and even on formal nights. Both casual and smart casual suggest pants or skirts with collared shirts or blouses, but smart casual discourages jeans and suggests jackets for men and pantsuits for women.

Non-Formal Night Outfit Ideas

Make sure to pack a couple bathing suit cover ups, to use when by the pool on a sea day, as well as on cruise port days. It’s available in quite a few colors, so you’re bound to find a style you like. Swimwear, baseball caps, tank tops for men, and ripped or very worn jeans are not appropriate for the main dining rooms and specialty restaurants. In this post we’ll go over what to wear during day and evening on a Norwegian Cruise, as well as special outfits you may want to pack for optional theme nights and parties.

If you’ve chosen an Alaska or Norwegian cruise you will want to pack layers as even in the summer months weather can be unpredictable. Holland America Line largely caters for American guests, who generally prefer informal dressing. Gala nights are no exception and therefore tuxedos are out and semi-formal is in (see above).

What do you wear on cruises during the day?

There are dress guidelines for certain restaurants on Norwegian ships, however there are no formal nights. You can definitely dress as formally as you like, however it’s rare to see gowns and tuxedos. I’d probably save the formal cruise attire for a Cunard or Princess Cruise. Black-tie attire is typically required on formal nights for luxury cruise lines. This can include black-tie dresses for women, tuxedos for men, and formal accessories.

Do I Need to Pack Different Outfits for Day and Night?

Keep this in mind when planning your wardrobe so you don't feel out of place. During your Caribbean cruise, you can count on having at least one Formal Night or Dress Your Best. Shorter cruises will call this evening Dress Your Best while longer sailings will call it Formal Night. Of all the destinations you can cruise with Royal Caribbean, you can expect the most participation on Formal Night if you’re sailing on a European itinerary.

Ship Deck Plans

Norwegian prides itself on allowing cruisers to dress as they please, providing a "come as you are" atmosphere during the day and at night. The most popular clothing is cruise casual, and passengers are free to wear whatever they'd like with an emphasis on comfort. Exceptions are the line's "dress-up" nights — two on sailings of a week or more and one on shorter voyages.

So if you are just hanging out around the ship — having a drink in a bar, playing in the casino, watching an evening show — then you are perfectly fine dressing down. While many people participate in formal night, a considerable chunk of passengers don’t. Women can simply wear a cocktail dress or a nice blouse with pants. For men, it’s fine to wear a suit, or even a buttoned-down shirt and a pair of slacks if you don’t want to get too fancy. Nice jeans would also be ok, although we’d suggest something slightly more dressy.

Also through the MedallionClass® app, you can chat/text with your kids, anywhere on board. Children’s menus are offered in main dining rooms and by request at specialty restaurants. Pizza, burgers, hot dogs and ice cream can be found at various dining locations. Complimentary jarred stage 1 & 2 baby food is available, if requested in advance via the Cruise Personalizer. Additionally, pureed fruits or veggies can be requested in the main dining room.

Overall, Royal Caribbean’s dress code is fairly laid back with just a few general rules to keep in mind. It’s important to remember that these dress codes apply only to the main dining room. If you plan to eat in the Windjammer buffet for most of your meals, you don’t need to follow these guidelines. At the end of the day, what you pack for a fun 3-night sailing to the Bahamas will be totally different than what you’d plan to wear on a 12-night cruise to Norway or 7-night cruise to Alaska. Don’t forget to pack your favorite swimsuits for fun-filled days by the pool or at the beach.

Our Evening Chic dress code leaves a lot of room for you to show off your personal style, although we’d ask you to leave your ripped jeans or favorite college sweatshirt in your stateroom. You can wear anything from designer denim paired with a blazer to a cocktail dress with a killer set of heels. Our more formal nights are called “Evening Chic” nights because they’re all about guests looking their absolute best—and loving it.
